Native Expressions: Dave McGary’s Bronze Realism

Sculptor Dave McGary has gained international renown for his masterful depictions of Native peoples. In creating works of extraordinary and colorful realism, McGary has used his many years of close – and often unprecedented -- interaction with Native Americans and First Nations people of Canada eager to have the true stories of their families preserved in bronze.

From March 7th through June 30th the Booth Western Art Museum will feature a 30-year retrospective of McGary’s work. The Exhibition will include over 30 sculptures representing the best of McGary’s career. This is the first time the Museum has honored a sculptor with a retrospective of this kind. The Exhibition will begin on March 7th with an opening reception and dinner, where McGary will premier his newest bronze entitled “Trophy Hunters” – a stunning sculpture depicting two Mohawk warriors on the morning of the Battle of Lake George, the seminal 1755 engagement during the early stages of the French and Indian War that had profound and lasting implications for the Mohawk Nation.

The Booth Western Art Museum, which is associated with The Smithsonian Institution, is located in downtown Cartersville, Georgia. The Museum opened in August 2003, and in its 120,000 square feet houses the country’s largest permanent exhibition space for Western art. Masters of the American West

The exhibit will take place from February 2nd to March 17th at the Autry National Center's Griffith Park location northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Masters of the American West is considered one of the country's most important Western art shows, and each year more than 75 nationally recognized contemporary Western artists challenge themselves to create and exhibit their very best work. Stylistically and thematically diverse, their works represent the extraordinary range of subject matter that contemporary, historic and mythic Western experiences inspire. The opening day events include a presentation by Ralph Oberg titled: "Climbing the Switchback Trail -- A Life and Career in the Mountains."
